Other Tumor Types

Prostate Cancer

Disease Information

Genentech BioOncology is dedicated to advancing the science of prostate cancer therapy through comprehensive research and education. Prostate cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells formed mainly in gland cells of the prostate.1

Prostate Cancer Demographic Statistics1

  • In 2010, about 217,730 people were diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States
  • About 32,050 men died of prostate cancer in 2010

Prostate Cancer Epidemiology

  • About 2 out of 3 prostate cancers are found in men over 65 years old, making age the strongest risk factor1
    • Other risk factors include race and family history of prostate cancer1
  • The 5-year relative survival rate for prostate cancer is nearly 100%1

Endometrial Cancer

Disease Information

Genentech BioOncology is dedicated to advancing the science of endometrial cancer therapy through comprehensive research and education. Endometrial cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells found in the inner lining of the uterus.2 The most common type of endometrial cancer is called endometrial adenocarcinoma.2

Endometrial Cancer Statistics2

  • Endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female reproductive organs in the United States2
  • In 2010, about 43,470 women were diagnosed with endometrial cancer and about 7,950 women died of the disease2

Endometrial Cancer Epidemiology

  • Risk factors for endometrial cancer include high levels of estrogen, total number of menstrual cycles in a lifetime, family history, and obesity2
  • Pregnancy and the use of birth control pills have been shown to lower the risk of endometrial cancer2
  • The 5-year survival rates for endometrial adenocarcinoma vary greatly by stage, from 90% for stage 0 to 15% for stage IV2

Head and Neck Cancers

Disease Information

Genentech BioOncology is dedicated to advancing the science of head and neck cancer therapy through comprehensive research and education. Head and neck cancers are the uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells formed in the squamous cells that line the mucosal surfaces of the head and neck.3

Head & Neck Cancer Statistics

  • Head and neck cancers account for about 3% to 5% of all cancers in the United States3
  • About 40,000 cases of head and neck cancer are diagnosed annually3

Head & Neck Cancer Epidemiology

  • Tobacco and alcohol use are the most common risk factors for head and neck cancer
    • 85% of head and neck cancers are linked to tobacco use3
  • The 5-year survival rates for head and neck cancer vary by site, but the overall rate was 57.1% from 1988 to 20014

Hepatocellular Cancer

Disease Information

Genentech BioOncology is dedicated to advancing the science of hepatocellular cancer therapy through comprehensive research and education. Primary hepatocellular tumors initiate their growth in the liver and include both benign and malignant categories.5,6 A large majority (≅75%) of all malignant liver cancers belong to the Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) category; these tumors typically originate from hepatocytes.6 Bile duct cancers (cholangiocarcinomas) account for another 10% to 20% of liver cancers; these tumors are initiated in the bile ducts that carry bile to the gallbladder.6

Hepatocellular Statistics

  • The American Cancer Society estimates about 24,120 new cases of primary liver cancer and bile duct cancer in the United States in 2010; about 18,910 deaths occur from these cancers7
  • On an average, men face an approximate 2.17 times higher lifetime risk of being afflicted with liver cancer than do women6

Hepatocellular Epidemiology

Several risk factors make a person more susceptible to develop HCC6

  • The most common risk factor for liver cancer is infection with hepatitis B virus or hepatitis C virus6
  • Cirrhosis of liver, diabetes, obesity, anabolic steroids, exposure to certain aflatoxins, and arsenic are some of the other risk factors for liver cancer6
