The evolving CLL treatment landscape
- Standard therapies for CLL have evolved over the last 10 years that may enable better responses in patients throughout the course of their disease38,39 (Figure 5)
- Treatment options have expanded from the single-agent alkylator therapy routinely used in the 1960s and 1970s to the introduction of purine analogs and the standard use of purine analog combination therapy in the 1980s and 1990s.38 Chemoimmunotherapy combining monoclonal antibodies and purine analogs was introduced in the last decade38,39
- Other therapeutic approaches that aim to improve the quality of patient response and help achieve better clinical outcomes are now being evaluated in preclinical and clinical trials9,40
